The Queensland Bream Open fishing competition heads bay side for the first time in its lucrative history. This year is the first year the event will be run in conjunction with the Cleveland Caravan, Camping, Boating & 4×4 Expo and the initiative has attracted major sponsorship from companies keen to be on board with the new initiative.

The launching of the competition team boats at the Raby Bay VMR boat ramps each morning between 6am and 6.30am is sure to attract dozens of onlookers. The boats will fish across the bay until early afternoon. The boats will be retrieved around 2pm and then trailered to nearby Cleveland Showgrounds to weigh-in at the Expo amongst thousands of industry representatives and the boating public.

The Queensland Open has always been a favourite among local SE QLD bream nuts, with names like Taylor, McKenzie, Britton and Wishey etched into the perpetual trophy numerous times.

The QLD Open has always been intended to be a small field tournament, exposing the wider fishing and boating public to the experience that is tournament bream fishing. “There’s bound to be thousands of keen boaties and fisherman travelling at the Cleveland Expo and the QLD Open looks to expose those people to what tournament fishing is all about,” explained ABT’s tournament director Simon Goldsmith.

The field of starters for the event reads like a role call of past and current QLD Open Champions. Four times event winners, and current champions Tristan Taylor and Dave McKenzie, from Team Samurai Reaction will be there keen to scribe their name on the winners’ trophy again and battle with the bays XOS bream.

“We can’t wait for the event to kick off. Three days on the bay catch plenty of big fish, and the opportunity to weigh-in in at the Cleveland Expo and in front of a new crowd is going to be awesome”, said Taylor.

Equally keen to hit the start line on Friday morning is a perennial bridesmaid Steve Eldred and Aaron Sharp from Team Atomic.

“There’s no other event like it on the calendar. A three-day tournament on the biggest arena that we get to fish, and weigh-ins in front of excited show fans is unique to the QLD Open. It’s an event that we never miss, and that we’re always pushing hard to try and win”, explained Sharp.

Sharp and Eldred as always will be a team to watch on the final day when the champion team is crown.

Spotters Sunglasses is the event-naming sponsor for the tournament and Marketing Manager for Spotters Dani Eastwood is excited at the potential that the new venue will bring.

“The Cleveland Expo has all of the elements needed for an amazing day out, with the best camping, touring, 4×4 and fishing brands represented. ABT running the Spotters QLD Open in conjunction with the Expo is the perfect space for the adventure bound to experience Spotters in their native environment. Having the weigh in as part of the expo only increases the excitement of the participating anglers and the public, and we can’t wait to see who will take out the honours this year.”

The Cleveland Caravan, Camping, Boating & 4×4 Expo runs from September 23-25th and the Spotters Sunglasses QLD Open will run on the 23rd/24th/25th in conjunction with the show.
